This is the famous Fibonacci number sequence, where the third number is sum of previous two numbers. The series itself was inspired when Leonardo Fibonacci observed the way the way rabbits bred themselves.
Soon the pattern found its way in understanding bee colonies, the seeds in sunflowers, structure of spiral shells, membranes of human ear and several other patterns found in nature.
This sequence is now widely adopted in forecasting of commodity prices, banking security passwords, designing betting systems and so on.
Another great example of how insights from one discipline can be applied across the others.
Don’t miss the great TED talk.
